First affordable homes ready at former college

The first four affordable homes being built on the site of a former Bristol college have been completed.

Merlin is developing 65 new homes in Fishponds in partnership with Barratt Homes, as part of the 200 homes being built on the former St Matthias College site. Now the first four homes, which were all sold under Merlin’s shared ownership scheme, have been completed, ready for their new owners to move in.

Development Officer Shane Smith said: “It’s always exciting to see the first homes on a development completed. House prices in Bristol are around ten times average earnings according to the National Housing Federation so these homes were a great chance for people to get onto the housing ladder.  We’ll have more shared ownership homes available on the site in the future as well as 50 homes available to rent.”

Merlin is increasing its homebuilding programme and is currently onsite building more than 200 homes at the moment and has plans to start work on at least 130 before the end of the year. The housing association aims to be building 300 new homes every year by 2019.
