Former Board Chair steps down

Merlin’s former chairman has stepped down from the Board after six years which have seen monumental changes to the housing association.

Andrew Frayling has served on our Board since May 2011 and was appointed chairman in March 2012, taking over from customer Chair Les Good. Over the following five years we have dramatically expanded our development programme, improved our financial position and seen a rise in customer satisfaction.

Paying tribute to her predecessor current Chair Vivienne Horton said: “Since Andrew came onto the Board and became Chair Merlin has moved forward at a real pace.
“Merlin has changed fundamentally during his tenure as set out in our Financial Statements where we reported our highest surplus ever of £13m and increasing our operating margin again to 36%. It’s in no small way that we are where we are today because of Andrew and have such a strong team of executive and non-executive directors in place to lead Merlin forward in the future.”

Speaking after the AGM, which was also attended by his predecessor, Andrew said: “I’ve really enjoyed my time at Merlin and all the support I’ve been given from customers and staff to help move things forward.

“The best thing we have done is to create the Customer Assembly to make sure that going forward there’s proper co-governance. And the other big change has been the creation of more affordable homes, which is so important, and is the biggest legacy from my point of view.”

Andrew’s place on the Board will be taken by Neil Rimmer. Neil is an experienced entrepreneur and most recently was one of the founders and Commercial Director of a retirement village business.
