Merlin director appointed apprentice ambassador

Winston Williams has joined the West of England Apprenticeship Ambassador Network to promote apprenticeships to local businesses. The network, which is run by the Government’s Skills Funding Agency, aims to encourage businesses to offer more apprenticeships.

His appointment follows a successful apprentice recruitment campaign earlier this year which saw Merlin inundated with more than 100 applications for the six apprenticeships on offer. When the new apprentices start work it will mean that 5% of Merlin’s 450 staff will be apprentices.

Winston said: “I was delighted to be asked to become an apprentice ambassador. Apprenticeships are a great opportunity for people to learn skills that could give them a career for life and receive a salary at the same time.

“At a time when the Government has announced more funding for small businesses to take on more apprentices I’m proud to have been given this opportunity to show how our apprentices have become an important part of our workforce and to promote apprenticeships to other businesses.

“We’re committed to serving our communities and tackling unemployment by offering opportunities which is why we’re not only taking on our own apprentices, but are funding apprenticeships with local organisations and supporting Inside Housing’s Homes Work campaign as well.”

Merlin is committed to taking on at least ten apprenticeships every year but is also working with its partners and contractors to enable more apprentices to be taken on through their businesses.
